Oh, iPod
i'm not a technical junkie. far from it. i like the idea of picturing myself out in the woods somewhere, chopping logs and hunting for my dinner. i often laugh to myself at all the 'business people' (who i swear are from outer space) who walk around talking to themselves wearing headsets about the urgency of the "bottom line" and the "action item list". the fact that they have a half dozen gadgets adorning their waistline like you might imagine Batman would have inspires eye-rollings and sometimes laughter from me. i dont think that's what they were hoping for in their ensembles, for sure. (by the way: o'hare airport in chicago is PRIME material for people watching of this sort)
So, perhaps it's with a bit of shame that i carry around an iPod. i got it at a discounted price from another source of happiness, my subscription to audible.com (audiobooks). i'm one of those weird people who love books, but hate reading. put me down in front of a book, and you'll be lucky to get 10 minutes of concentration out of me. ...or, if you can get me to read, i wont remember any of it a minute later and i have to read it over again. but listening... that's much easier. i can listen while i do my innane graphic design stuff, and in fact i even seem to be more productive. since i got my ipod i've made it through a dozen or so books... something that would have taken me a couple years otherwise.
right now, i'm trudging through "Crime and Punishment". (the down side with audiobooks is that the selection is somewhat limited, but you can always bet on the classics.) it's a great book, but my favorites so far have to be either the "chronicles of narnia" (i read a few of them as a kid, but they're always great to read) and "collapse" by jared diamond.
so now, i guess the challenge is to picture myself chopping logs in the woods and wearing ipod earphones that lead out of my breast pocket. hmm... sounds like a good ad concept.
